Sunday Sport Again Debated By Borough Council
/ "We have acted with reasonable tolerance in regard t* this matter and have been firm against eompetitive sport on j| Sunday. We may have our personal views about the questaoit of Sunday sport but we should take a broad view as a council/*'
Whether or not the Levin Borough CoUncil should permit the Horowhenua Softball Association to play friendly and practice games on a Sunday or a lioliday prompted this remafk from the Mayor, Mr. H. ■ B. Burdekin, at Monday night's meeting of the council. The association made the request in respect of Cambridge Park. Cr. W. Telford, however, /was apprehensive, taking the view that the request was the "thin edge of the wedge," and he visualised Sundays becoming days of sport. The borough or city fathers should take steps to stop it, he said. Cr. J. Miller took the same view. People swam on Sundays and that was sport, said Cr. A. W. Parton. Providing sport was ' properly controlled and did not end up in a "donnybrook," he could §ee no way in whieh the council could odr.-l, remarked Cr. R. S. Antcliif. If the ccftmcil tried to stop soltoall from being played on a Sunday, a very large field would be opened up such as bowls, tennis, cricket and countless others. "We'd soon be in a dilemma," he added. The council granted the necessary permission on a vole being taken, Cr. Miller registering his objection.
Cricket also ' came into discus-s sion when the Mayor mentioned that he had observed a gable itt progress on the Levin Park pomain on Sunday and he wondered whether the resolution -made last year governed the domain also. The resolution was that the cricket association was made the guanUians of Sunday play and were tb 'decide whether games be played or not, being responsible to wiO council for the eonduct of: all matches. « An investigation of the mintite book, however, revealed that' the resolution was solely in respect of uhe Weraroa Reserve. "* ■ I In regard to the game he had seen on the domain, Mr. Burdekin said he had wondered wheth4r play was advisable so soon after such heavy rain. In order to eii* sure good playing pitches this should also pertain at the Weraroa Reserve, and it was decided to ssk the association to ensure that pitclies were changed regularty each week. , A further resolution regarding Sunday play was that the association be given the same instructions -as last year and also that the LeVin Park Domain be injcluded. -
