Sports Centre To Be Discussed

Some time ago this newspaper strongly advocated the establishment on the Playford Park Domain of a sports centre for providing indoor training facilities , for footbaU teams and the boxing and physical training club members and other similar sports , bodies. The Levin Borough Council showed, too, that it was aware of the necessity for such a building and agreed that the place for it would be the new sports area on the Playford Estate. It was obvious, however, that before such a centre could be constructed enthusiasm must be shown by the sports bodies themselves. Is that enthusiasin there? Evidentiy it is not because the sports organisations have failed to get together, as requested, and give the council a lead as to what they require. An individual football club, however, has approached the council for space on the Playford Domain for its own gymnasium, and it is believed that other clubs have siipilar ideas in mind. Consi'dering the number of football clubs in Levin, it would appear unlikely that all can be accommodated- in separate units. The council has how taken the j initiative and is to write this. week ; to all the sports bodies likely to be concerned, inviting them to attend a meeting. Unfortunately, no definite date for the meeting or a venue was stipulated when the council made its decision at Monday night's meeting. However, the replies should give the council some idea of whether or not such a meeting would be appreciated. The separate application cariie from the Athletic Football Club and was discussed by the Playford Park Domain Board, having been referred to it from the council at previous meeting. Cr. D. J. Sweetzer said that the time was rapidly approaching ! when evening training facilities for clubs would have to be provided. Many other towns made such provision. He suggested that a move be made along these lines, not necessarily for the athletic club but for- all. They coqld get together and work out their train!ing nights. ► The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, said that he quite agreed, but he wondered how far the council would get if every club esked for space for a separate gymnasium. There was also the boxing club to consider and it woUld be best for all to combine and have one i gymnasium. i Cr. R. A. Frederikson moved that the domain board call a meeting of all those interested. "Those who get behind it will get first priority in training nights/' it was stated.
