Show Judges Outspoken On Dairy Section

The exten^t to which judges can differ in their conclusions as to the quality of livestock was vividly illustrated at the Royal Show in Palmerston North when the dairy section was decided. The champion cow of all breeds and winner of the Point Blank Press Co. Ltd. and Alfa Laval Separator Co.'sCups was the Ayrshire, Eden Park Fuchsia, owned and bred by Mr. A. D. Buchanan, of Tiakitahuna, Palmerston North. This animal was unplaced in its own breed the previous day. On the question of the dairy section, three of the four judges had some fairly pointed comment to make. They expressed doubt as to the a'dvisability of conducting this type of competition, pointing out that there was little common ground for comparing the various breeds of dairy animals, that it was probably unwise to develop inter -breed rivalry when there was ample scope in the country for all of them, that it was difficult ' to attain unanimity "between four judges, and that too many animals were. paraded, cluttering up the show ring and making the work of the judges too involved. The three judges who subscribed to these views were Messrs W. Y. Dickie, of Mataura, N. D. Dreadon, of Dargaville, and F. Mclntosh, of Berry, New South Wales. The fourth member of the judging panel was Mr. S. ' G. Morgan, of Mangatoki, who. declined to comment.
