Historic Wedding.

After the first all-pakeha weddfng ceremony in New Zealand, performed at Waimate North 118 years ago, the bride and bridesmaids left for Paihia sitting in ■•chairs suspended between poles carried by Maoris. The remainder qf the wedding party walked. This information, together with a copy of the marriage register recording this historic wedding, .is furnished by Mr. W. E. Bedggood, of Waimate North. The groom was William Gilbert Puckey and the bride Matilda Davis. Although generally believed to have been performed at Paihia the ceremony actually took place at Waimate on October 11, 1831. Although this was the first all-pakeha wedding in New Zealand the first Christian marriage took place eight- years previously.
