Court Sequel To Crossing Accident
As he had no recollection of the accident he would leave it to the Court to decide his guilt or otherwise, said Reginald Arthur Hill, driver of the breakdown truck which recently collided wirh a traih on the Queen Street level crossing, Hiil, who entered a formal plea of guiiry, was charged in the Police Jourt, Levin, toaay, with crossing a railway line when it was not clear. He told the Court that he had no recoilection of the bells at the crossing ringing, the lights flashing or the train approaching. The Bench, Messrs. J. s. Moir and G. Sweetman, Justices of the Peace, commented that Hill had prohably suffered enough from the accident and ordered him to pay the court costs of 10s. On a second charge of failing to oe in possession of a current iriver's licence, Hill was convicted and ordered to pay costs of 10s. Sergeant w. Grainger, in detaiiing the circumstances, said that on September 12, Hill had been drivmg west to east along Queen Street and had come into contact with the Field's Express, proceeding south, at 4.40 p.m. The truck was demolished and Hill had been flung violently on to the footpath, sufi'eriiig severe injuries, including head injuries. He had recently been discharged from the Palmerston North Hospital, but was still receiving med'ical attention. The warning apparatus at the crossing had been functioning at the time of the accident.
