Marshall Aid Leaders Agree On Trade Policy

The European Marshall Plan . leaders -tondght -agreed to .f.ree 50 per cen't. of their private trade with one another for ifnport quotas by D.ecember '1-5. The 18 member countries were -also asked to report by that date on the regional arrangements to create broader European markets. The decision was taken in the form of a resolution approved b,y Cabinet members from the 18 rhember nations meeting as the cbuncil of 'the Organisation for Economic Co-operation. The proposal for freeing interEUropean trade from export quota ; barriers was made by the British j Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir I Stafford Cripps. The uitimate aim | of the plan is to form a single large i market in Europe in which goods and services can move freely. As well as the freeing of trade,: the plan deals with intra-European payments, duel prices, closer economic co-operation and manpower. After the adoption of the plan, the Marshall Plan Admlnistrator, Mr. PauLHoffman, deelared: "The manner in which the resolutions adopted are implemented will be decisive in Europe's history for the next 'century."
