Scientists' Salaries Equal To Labourers
DUNEDIN, Nov. 1. "TTow can we hope to reeruit re neareh scientists with salaries like tliis;'" asked IMr F. G. Penford (Can terburv Association) at the annual conferenee of the N.Z. Manufacturers' Federation when quoting from an advertisement appcaring in u morning paper in which the De])artment of Scientific and Tndustrial Research sought applications from university graduates witii M.Se., and B.Sc., with first-class honours while offcring salaries ranging from £372 "per annum to £447. "Here we are." he said, "offering salaries to a B.Se., with first-class honours that are eomparable with those of a labourer. " The countrv should offer salaries that Avould attract. He added: "A nian Avould require .to have tremendous enthusiasm for his job or he would not stop at it. He would get out into private undertakings. " NTr.
