Chinese Reds Arrest U.S. Consul-General
Received Sunday, 7 p.m. WASHINGTON, Oct. 29. The State Department announced that Chinese Communist police at Mukden ha-d arrested the American Consul-General, Mr. Angus Ward, and four of his staff on charges of beating a Chinese formerly employed at the Consulate. The State Department directed the American Consul-General at Peiping, I Mr. Edmund Cluhh, immediately to seek an appointment with the high- | est Chinese Communist authorities to ohtain the men's release. The Communists forced the Mukden Consulate to close on May 18 and since then the American staff has heen trying to leave China but the Communists had not allowed them to do so. The Peiping radio said today that a worker was beaten into unconsciousness and was'now in hospital in a- serious eondition. The root of the • trouble was said to he the worker 's claim for payments due to him. The radio said the case would he hrought before Mukden 's People 's Court.
