Portugal Taking No Chances With Franco
LISBON, Oct. 21. Portugal is taking no chances when General Franco arrives in a Spanish cruiser tomorrow for a four days' officiai visit, his first trip abroad for 11 yeai-s. Every shopkeeper on route from the quay to the palaee, where tlie head of the Spanish State will stay, hss been interviewed and every liouseholder 011 the route has been made to sign a document pledging himself as personally responsible for Franco 's safety. j More than 200 Spanish secret police have already arrived in Lisbon to buttress the precautions the Portuguese police are taking to guard Franco, and extra troops have been drafted into the eapital which last night was beginning to look like an armed camp with military and police cordons strung across the principal streets. Guards have also been posted on rooftops and balconies. The British Ambassador will not attend the ceremonies being arranged in honour of Franco whose regime Mr. Ernest Bevin has said "we detest. " Nor will the American, French, Belgian or Swiss Envoys.
