Royal Humane Society's Bravery Awards

Awards made by the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand include a f ramed certificate to Mr Haddyn J ames Herbert for rescue work when a truck went over a bank into the fiooded Pongaroa river. The citatioji reads: — " On Thursday, September 2, 1948, a light truck was proceeding tovvards Pongaroa with T. Al. Moynihan driving. Mrs McGili vva.in the cab, and H. J, Herbert and H. 0. Heath on the tray. The truck left .the, road, somersaulted down the bank and came to rest in the fiooded Pongaroa River, almost coinpleteiy submerged Herbert and Heath. were held under th« water by the tray of the truck. Her bert succeeded iu escaping from undei the tray, and he then released Moyiu han and Mrs McGili who were trapped in the cab. To do this, he had to open the cab door under water at the risk oi being swept away by the flood. Other awards have been made as toi low : — Bronze medallion to Alex Reid whu saved the lives of four men at JMakecu by going to their aid in a dinghy in a rough sea. Framed certificate to Constable D. A. Rowe, who rescued a wonian in a burning building in Auckland. Letter of conimendation to Glenny - Eyles, aged 10 years, who saved a gir from drowning in a deep pool at Wata roa. Bronze medallion eaeh to Rober Jenkins, aged 15 and Dodi Edward Pp kere, aged 17, who rescued a nuinbei of children swept out of their depth a Opunake Beach.
