Received Monday, 10.25 a.m. HONG KONG, Oct. 16. The British coastal steamer Anhui was shelled for 15 minutes !as she was steaming out of Amoy [Harbour. The shells came from Communists on the mainland. Nationalist warships replied to the fire. Offlcers of the Anhui said on arrival in Hong Kong today that two shells blasted holes on the starboard side and another crashed through the deck. At least three more plunged into the sea close by. Within a few moments wounded Chinese passengers were sprawling - on the deck, sereaming ahd groan- ; ing. A man, woman and chiid were I kifled outright, and 22 wounded. j The hail of shells continued as the iship sped beyond range. The Anhui was carrying 1400 'evacuees from Amoy Island. All the casualties were Chinese. Captain James McKinley, master o'f the Anhui, said that all flags were flying on the ship when she left Amoy. Union Jacks were also painted on the hatch covers. Half an hour after the Anhui got outside she ran into a north-east gale and as the ship rolled, the ship's doctor, offlcers, crew and passengers moved among the injured attending them. There was no panic.
