Tribute Paid To Deceased Parliamentarians
WELLINGTON, Oct. 14, Tributes to the memory of the late Mr Matiu Eatana, who was the Member of Parliament for Western MaOiri at the time of* his death, and to the late Mr Frederiek Lve, a former Member of Parliament for 10 years, were paid by me.mbers of the House when resolutions reeording the faithfnl service given to New Zealand by them were passed. The late Mr Eatana 's death was nn-' expeeted and occurred with tragic suddenness, said Mr Fraser, Though Mr Eatana did not often take part in deb&tes in the Honse, he Was very earnest in his views and painstakingly assidnOns in looking after the affairs of. the Maori people in his electorate» *The svmpathy of every member of thfi. Honse wonld be extended to his widow and family of six young children. Mf Holland, on behalf of the Opposition, endorsed the Prime . Minister 's tribute to Mr Eatana and said that Mr Eatana,. as leader of ple and his church, had the esteem and affection of those he Tepresented, The news of his death came as & pfo--foufid shock, and to Mrs Eatana ahd his family the Opposition offefed its svmpathv. Others who paid their personal tributes to Mr Eatana were Messrs E. T1, ffiirikatene, H. J. Holyoake, T. Omana, and J. B. Cotterill. The late Mr Frederiek Lve Was a man whose character compelled friendsbip, said Mr Fraser. He was siheefC and straightforward and grew up in the politics! schonl of Liberalism. He was natiouallv popular and sineerity was the kevunte of his character. Mr Holland said that, though the late Mr Lye was born ift England, he lived all bnt five years of his life ift New Zealftnd and could be regftrded as a real New Zealander. He played a very important part in the growth of the dairv industrv in the. Waikato &nd had a wide knowledge and deep appreciation of human needs. He was an example of what a New Zealander should be. _ Mr G. F. Sim also paid a tribute to that late Mr Lye and the svmpathy of . t.he House was extended to his widowo and -family living in Cambridge.
