News Briefs From Council's Meeting

A petition signed by 13 residents of Bell Street protesting against any proposals to erect lorry garages or commercial store sheds in the street was received at Wednesday night's meeting ' of the Otaki Borough Gouncil. The objections- were stated to be the danger to children from the lorries in a thickly populated area, early and late running of lorries being disturbing to the residents, severai of whom are aged and invalids, and the fact that the narrowness of the street made it wholly unsuitable and impractical for such use. As no application had been received, the council agreed that the petition be received and -that the objeetion would be noted when any permit was applied for. * *■ . # TwO' letters were received from Mr. J. C. Meyer, the first regarding the completion of tho purchase of land required for street widening and blocked drains in Dunstan Street, and the second expressing disappointment at' the town planners' decision to include Dunstan Street in the future industrial area. • The letters were received after an explanation had been made that the street widening would be proceeded with when levels were to hand. * * * Mr. M. C. Holmes, of Otaki Railway, advised that the borough reserve boundary f ence was in "shoeking repair," and that much work and material was needed to make it stock proof. Between 300 and 400 posts and severai thousand battens would be required. The writer offered to keep the fence in order. The works committee was asked to report on this matter. * * * Rates paid up to the time of the council's meeting totalled £4457 18s 9d, reported the town clerk, Mr. Alex. Wilson. ThiS; amount was well up to the usual p'roportion. The clerk added that only two objectors remained to the hew borough valuati'on. Objections to the urban farm lands list could be made up to October 20. * * * Messrs Kerridge Odeon, Ltd., Auckland, submitted a statement in connection with the picture benefit evening on August 30. This showed receipts of £20 10s 9d and expenses £15 15s, leaviiig a ,bal-, ance of £4 15s 9d. 'The clerk advised that the return would be larger than the figure stated owing to the sale of tickets. The outcome was considered disappointing. It is hoped that on a future occasion mo're time to organise will be given. * * * Mr. C. W. Foster advised that after a consultation with the Housing Department engineer,a soak pit for drainage' at the end of the new street off Matene Street would now be sunk to the true gravel bed. Mr. Foster's interest in this matter was commended.
