Frosts Played Havoc With Hawke's Bay Fruit

HASTINGS, Oct. 13.

This season's stone fruit crop in the Hawke's Bay will be about a 50 per cent a,verage crop as the result of the recent series of frosts, aceording to a preliminary survey. A more aceurate assessment will be possible as the fruit develops in size. The tehtative estimate that the stone fruit crop will be' only 50 per cent aver age, is based on the overall district picture. There are a few growers who have suffered almost a total Iqss of stone fruit, and peaehes in particular, while others have experieneed only a partial loss. It is signifieant that where growers fired throughout the frost period, the losses are only of a minor nature. Prospects for the pear crop are faii .though it will be belqw average.
