CSnenial — From

WELLINGTON, October 14. Large fields comprising the majority of thejbest horses in commission will be seen out at Trentham tomorrow when the Wellington Racing Clnb opens its three days spring meeting. The main eyent, the Wellington Handicap, has a field of 25, this being the saf ety' margin at" the starting barrier, five horses having had to be balloted out with right of re-entry in the event of scratchings. The other open races are the Wainui and Shorts Handicaps and the Desert Gold Stakes for thr'ee-year-old fillies. • Present weather cpnditions are perfect and if rain does not interv.ene the going will be fast. . Ruling f avourites for the main events are : Wellington Handicap, Liebestraum and Blue Seal; Wainui Handicap, Faultina and Dem'onic ; Shorts^Handicap, Gold Script and Fajse Step.

Demonic has come into favour for the Wainui Handicap through his fine finishing effort in the Solway Handicap at Masterton. Faultina's form has heen very consistent and the .long Trentham straight will suit her. The distance will suit Imperial, but his Otaki running was poor. Gay Stroller might need the race, ;but may be troublesome later at the meeting. Opulent is consistent and if conditions remain fine the going will be to Opulent's advant- , age. He runs a merry mile. Blank Cheque is in form, but an easing of the track will be to his benefit. However, if one is to judge Blank Cheque on his track essays on firm going he will need to be respected. Taking a line through her sprint success on the first day at Otaki and her smart track work since La ModeLe will take a lot of beating. She is very fit. The distance will suit Outlook, but judge d on Masterton form he might need the race. Of the others Pierre reads best. Liebestraum's briliiant finishing run on the outer in the Masterton Cup to get within a neck of Renown has earned him favouritism for the Wellington Handicap. He has drawn a wide position, but this should not prove a handicap in the run down the straight. Signal Officer has a solid weight. His third in the Gran'dstand Handicap on second day of ihe Dunedin meeting with 10.4 was a splendid effort. He represents class and should be in the m^ney at the meeting. Blue Seal is a strong fancy after Otaki form as a.so is Distinction. But for a check at a critical stage of the race Leyma would have been much cioser in the Masterton Cup last week. The distance tomorrow is not vbeyond him and with an uninterrupted passage in the running he should be a force to contend with in the run to the judge. Avenger was running on nicely into fourth in the main race on the last 'day at Otaki. He looks ,well and as, not ..witho.ut.va, ,good chance. There are several others with prospects such as Kartikeya, who only has to give of his best to be with the leaders over the last furlong, Maryburn, Renowned, Bright Side, Helio, Detract, Langham and Angeli. The last named will only need io run one of her best races to have a lightweight prospect. However, form and class points to Liebestraum, Leyma, Blue Seal, Signal Officer, Langham, Avenger and Bright Side being the seven from which the winner is likely to come from. Recent sprint form is represented in the Shorts Handicap "with False Step, who has never looked better than at present, Gold Scrip, a speedy three -year-old from Auckland, Castlebrae, Swayup, a smart three-year-old from the south with a row of recent successes, Trinidad, Whitely, one of the smartest beginners in the race able to hold his position over six, and His Nibs. Others not far from their best form are Julius Caesar, Flying Sovereign, Brookland and Solimbine. However, on lacest form Fa!lse Step, Swayup and Gold Scrip look like fighting out the issue, with Swayup the most likely to snatch the decision on the post. Prospects for Trentham and Auckland are:
