With only two- dissentients, the Conservative Party's annuai conference today passed a resolution from the Truro Division insisting that Britain, the British Commonwealth and Empire must have full freedom of right to make its own tariff arrangements. The resolution maintained that the Commonwealth's fnture safety and prosperity depended upon a policy of Empire developments under a system of mutual preference in its widest sense. Mr. Juiian Amery, son of the former Domin(ion Sleoretary, Mr. L. S. Amery, sa^l during the debate on the resolution : "This first nriority should be to develop with our own kith and kin in the Commonwealth new sources of those essential suppjies which we obtain today only through United States charity. Let our" ieaders proelaim their faith in the Empire und the Conservatives will sweep the country." Mr. Harold Macmjllan, winding up the .debate, said he believed that the people's faith could be found in a united Empire and a united Europe. "The British Empire can be the centre and pivot of the grand design."
