Churchill Points To Duty Of Government

. Copyright )

Received Friday, 10.15 a.m, LONDON, Oct. 13. The Opposition Leader, Mr, Churchill, said: tonight that the duty of the Government if it cared for the country was to call an im-^ mediate stop to all schemes of' na^ tionafisation and to "concentrate on the grievous task of saving us from fipproaching bankruptcy," He was speaking at a reception to over 300 Conservative trade unionists in London. "If they did this, great improvements in every direction might be possible. If they merely continue to f alter and sh'ow themgelves incapable of a decision, and at the same tyne continue their vague at- 1 tacks upon the foundatibns of our | national prosperity, they will only make things worse for all of us and for themselves." i Jndifferent to Election Date. | Mr. Churchill attacked the Prime Minister, Mr. Attlee, for not ending earlier the speculation about the election date, which, as Mr. Attlee admitted, had caused a disturbance in trade and industry, Mr. Churchill , said the Conservatives were quite indifferent to the date of the election so long as they were not taken by surprise. "From the national point of view, the sooner the elections the better," he said. 1 If the Socialists wished to redeem their record, they should do their duty in the intervening months by carrymg out the financial reforms that -were necessary, however unpopular they might be. Mr. Churchill said the Conservatives supported the priirtuple of collective bargaining between . recognised and responsible trade unions and employers, and included in colective bargaining the right to strike. "We hope that the Conservative wage earners in industry will join the trade unions and will take an effective part in their work, not as party men but as good trade unionists I consider myself • a trade unionist." \
