Fancy Dress Ball Attracts Large Gathering
An eyent whlQh always attraatg phi}dren of all ages was held in the Regent Hall on Saturday aftprnoon. This was the lancy dress ball conducted by the Catholic soeiai committee and heipers^ Despite the heavy showers' which persisted throughput the day, there was a recprd attendance and practically every family in Levin must have been represented by the large number of ' children of all sizes dressed in every type of cqstume eonceivable. The work that the mothers, and in some cases fathers of the phiidien, must have put into evolving and makihg the costumes, wpuld .surely have amourited-- to: . hundreds of hours overall. " ' ' '• - An" outstanding costume, if ic can. be called. a costume, was that of one participant erititled "prehistoric man," compiete ■ with a huge bone, which gaye- every indication of having origfnated trom prehistoric days. Following the grand march, which was ably organised despite the .large number of children,, the. diffi'cult problem of "judging so many entrants was undertaken by •the three judges, the Mayoress, Mrs. H. B. Burdekin, Mrs. C. M. O'Sullivan and Mr. L,-J, Cantwell, On the dais with the judges were the Sisters of the Convent, Who were greatly interestd In the various costumes, arid Rev. Father E. .J. Lynch. - ' . . During the afternoon an interlude of- National dancing by- pupils > of the Jean Scott School of Dane*ing was presented, accompanied by Piper Yprsto'n. At the conclusion • the • an^npuncer, Mr. N. D. Tilley, on- -behalf of the committee,- thankedall those who had wprked so hard to make the ball the grand - sue.cess that it was, and. especially the judges for carrying out rheir difiicult task so well and the Jean Scott School of Dancing fpr generously providing such pleasant entertainment. He also thanked the Levin Munieipal Band, which rendered items outside the hall," Mr. E. J. Stanley and Mr. C. S. Abbott for erecting the public address systeni and O'Connors Cordials, Ltd., for generously donating soft drinks, The Prize List. Many cash prizes donated by parishioners were competed for and resulted as . follows:— Best dressed girl: Paddy Webb (gipsy) ; best dressed boy: Francis' du Rhone (French artist) ; girl's national costume: Marie Yorston (Hungarian) ; boy's national costume: L. Elliott (Old English) ; most original girl: gandra Plimmer (Qarmen Miranda) ; most orjginal boy: Errol Hesp (prehistoric man) ; best pair: Errol Cqllier and Edgar Cowley (Tweedledum, tweedledee) ; best fairy: Florence McKay (blue f-airyX; ,best girl under five years: Dale Williams (canary) . ; best boy undqr five : Dale Hunt (Turk) ; best fairy under five ; Angela Kerry; consolation prize fpr pair: Philhpa Tilley and Ron Gebbie (birds) ; consolation prize: Kath-' lepn Nees (fairy) .
