The new scale, which operates from April 1, 19'49, was announced this evening by the Minister of Education, Mr McCombs. It provides for a basic salary of £1300 for professors, £1100 for associate professors and £800 rising to £900 for senior lecturers. Certain heads of departments in Colleges may receive an allowance of £100 over and above the salary they receive.. as senior lecturers. Ther prineipals of the two Agricultural Colleges will receive £1750. Provision has also been made for the establishment of a special fund out of which the basic salaries of a limited number of professors and senior lecturers. may be augmented by amounts of up to £300 for professors and £100 for senior lecturers. This ®augmentation fund will be administered by a special committee set up by the University* grants committee. All otker university teachers and certain members of the non-teaching staff, will receive general 'increases similar to those recently awarded to teachers, namely, up to £22 a year from July 1, 1948, ahd a further increase of up to £13 a year from June 1, 1949. This means that the rates for •lecturers will now be £660 to £760 and for junior lecturers £460 rising to £560. Mr McCombs said that the principle of augmentation, thougli not previously applying in New Zealand, was quite commonly applied in British Universities. Its object was to reward men of outstanding merit and to enable the colleges to retain their services.
