Cycle Track For Villages Settlement Road
The provision of a cycle track for the safety of school children and others in - the Horowhenua Viliage Settlement and Kimberley Road area is being sought by the Horowhenua County Council. Approaches have already%been made to the Main Highways Board and it is the intention of the council to send a further letter regarcLiftg the progress of fhe scheme. The cycle track is sought for the main highway from Kimberley Road to Levin. At yesterday's meeting of the council the chairman, Mr. A. M. Colquhoun, said that children in the Kimberley Road area had been in the habit of walking tq the junction of the main road to meet the school bus. This practice had ibeen stopped by the Education Board, it being * stated that the bus was not available for the children of that area and that bhey would have to find their own means of transport. As a result bicycles would be used to a greater extent and there was a danger that the children might get injured on this busy highway. One of the. couneillors skid that he had been speaking about the matter to Mr. Semple and he had been told by him that the danger was recognised, and that the work would proceed thi£ summer. It was decided by the meeting that the Works Department be again approached and asked for more information. as to the progress of the plan. Cattle On Roads. 1 The Hokio Beach Residents' /Committee wrote drawing the council's attention to cattle wandering on the roads in that loeality. The chairman, Mr. Colquhoun, said that the position was governed by the system of fencing and the laek of fencing of properties aiong the road and near the Hokio Stream. The ' council was not in the position . to make people fence the properties. The ranger was doing all he could and would continue to do his best to keep stock off the roads. In- regard to a suggestion from the committee that its members be appointed honorary rangers, he did not think this. would be either desirable or workable. It was better for the county's own ranger to do the best he could. . It was pointed out by Cr. J. D. Aitchison bhat some'cows were being grazed on the roads by persons supplying milk to Hokio residents. If some of the residents were observing the law the others should be made to also. That was only fair. It was decided to ask the ranger to continue to do -the best he could. The wandering stock nuisance at Tokomaru was brought to the council's notice by Cr. J. H. P. Liggins. It was being treated as a joke by many of the residents and the fines were regarded as cheap grazing fees. He advocated more activity by the ranger and .heavier penalties. The ranger, he added, was in the awkward position of having too many other duties to perform. If a cow brought in £40 annually ,a £5 fine would still be cheap grazing, commented a councillor. Re-Alignment Of Road. The Levin Borough Council wrote inquiring if any further information was available regarding the taking over of the section at the southern end of the Levin Borough in order to bring about the re-alignment of the main road and the beautifying of the area. The chairman said that a.n advertisement 'had been published, notifying the intention of the Government to take the land under the Public Works Act. The borough council, as well as the county council, would be advised when the land was taken over. The borough council, therefore, knew as much at present as the county council. He agreed that the area was an eyesore at present. Miscellaneous Matters. A letter from a firm of solicitors regarding a water race on the property of Mr. E. Cresswell, was referred to the couneillors for the riding and the engineer for a report. Mr. F. Eales, Otaki Railway, sought the county's advice regarding a culvert problem. The matter was referred to the engineer. A request from Mr. J. J. H. Best, Te Horo, for a culvert was also referred to the councillor for the riding and the engineer for a report. The floor of the subway under the railway line at Tokomaru was sinking in places, reported Cr. Liggins. The council decided to repair the damage in concrete, but that the work be done at a season most suitable to users. ' A request for a grant was received from the "Levin Plunket Society. The council voted the usual amount of £5 5s.
