Too Many Assaults By Men On Women
AUCKLAND, Oct. 10. A young man who a>saulted his sweetheart in a fit of jealousy found hiinself before the Police Court today. The girl laid a charge to teach him a lesson. She regretted her* decision but found it was too late to have the charge dropped. She was willing to marry the man tomorrow. Tlie man charged was Ian Jamee Robertson, aged 23, a traveller. The police said he had been keeping company with a probationer nurse for eight months. At 3.30 on the morning of October 2 she found Robertson lying on her bed at the Xurses' Home. She ordered him out but he jumped up and slapped her face. She fell buinping her head against the wall. He grabbed her by the throat, dragged her about 15 i'eet along the passage and out of the home where she managed to escape and find help. - She suffered a bruised knee and tliroat. The girl hjyl given Robertson tlie cold.shoulder in August. Defence cbunsei, fequesting leniencv, said the girl was extreinlv attractive and Robertson was jealous i>f attentions from other men. K,obertson atteuded a reunion and took too much to drink. He decided to visit the girl, but fell asleep, on her bed while awaiting her. Mr S. L. Paterson, SAr., sentencing Robertson to one month 's imprisoumont, said: "There are far too many assaults bv young men ou young women, and the Court? must act as a tio terrent. It is incidents like these that result in murders. "
