Another Castle Handed To The Nation
Received Monday, 7 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 10. Sizergh Oastle in Westmorland, one of the few.'-remaining border casties still oceupied by direct descendants oi its original owners, has been transferred to 'the N'ational Trust by Mr. and Mrs. Hornyoid Strickland. They will continue to live in the castle as tenants of the trust but will throw it open to the public 011 certain days each week. Mr. Strickland said the decision hau been foreed , upon the family by the effects of crippling taxation and death duties. The tower, which is the oidest part of the castle, was built in the fourteenth century and is decorated by a coat of arms which records a marriage alliance between the Deincourt family to whom Henrv II. granted the castle in 1170, and the Strieklands who oceupied the neighbouring manor of Gieat Strickland. During the 00uyears since this alliance, Sizergh has regnlarly deseended through the male line which has produced uo fewer than 31 members of diffierent British Parliaments and eleven sheriffs of the eounty.
