Fifty Years Onwards
Tuesday, October 11, marks the 50th anniversary of the South African War. The first contingent from New Zealand left on October 21, 1899. The claim has been made fhat this was the Dominion's first expeditionary force, but it has never been officially classified as such. Composed of volunteers it was certainly the first contingent to leave New Zealand's shores to rally to England's support in a foreign war. . Mr, McKeown left with the sixth contingent at the age of 21, arriving at Pretoria in time to join Brigadier Plumer's column as it was about to set out qn the trek to Pietersburg. This campaign marked the start of the last phase of the war in South. Africa..A Taranaki man, Mr. McKeown arrived from New plymouth last Christmas to settle in Levin. Other members of the sixth contingent now living in Levin are Messrs. J. Pescini, H. Atklns, F. Blank and F. Armstrong. Mr. Richards, of Shannon, whose death occurred this week, was another member.
