Want More Say In Matters Educational
AUCKLAND, October 5. The Government's aetion in passing the Education Amendment Bill, 1949, through the • House of Representatives with out first hearing the opinion of education boards in tKe Dominion was strongly criticised by- members of the Auckland Education Board today. ' Several members criticised the features of the Act relating to the control of employees. Mr. D. W. Rutledge said that the board !s employees might be subject to the Public Service regulations which would not be good. "We do not want more departmentafl control in New Zealand, ; ' said the, chairman (Mr. G. K. Hamilton^. ' ' No department is getting through as much work with so small a stafE as this onei ' ' The board passed a motion expressing disappointment and -alarm that the Minister omitted to acquaint the board of the proposed Bill in time for comment. It trusted that before further amendments to the Act all education boards would have the regulations submitted to them before being gazetted., 1 .A. motion that the Minister be asked to explain why the Auckland Board had been reported to offer no objection, was defeated.
