Fish Poaching Still Too Prevalent
AUCKLAND, Oct. 5; - Past years of shrewd and sometimeS svstematie poaching, have hastened the decline of Auckland 's sea fisheries. More effective policing of the Gulf and coast where inshore trawling or .Danish Seine netting is subject to extensive restrictions, has greatly reduced abuseS but there is still some evidence of breaches and there is at least one weak spot in the regulations. This could furnish unscrupulous fishermen With an opportunitv to flout the law and laugh at the risk of detection. Sea and air resources have been mobilised in a daily watcll against poachers. Stealth has been matched by stealth since the Navy provided one of its harbour defence launches for protection duties on the outer grounds. More recently patrols by aircraft fitted with exhaust silencers, have added a deterrent to the temptation of taking a quiek and easy catch in elosed waters. Offenders now also face the prospect of £500 fine and possible con* fiscation of boat and gear.
