NEW YORK. Oct. 3. Rtrikes in the United States steel and coal industries are costing the nation more than £16,000,000 a d'ay, says the United Press. The hold-up in America 's two basic industries is probablv the heuviest bloAv ever dealt to business. Altiiouuh 102.000 coal miners rcturued to the pits todav, nearlv 1,000,000 coal and steel workers remained on strike for pensio'n benefits. Bome S0.000 anthracite miners ended a fortnicht of idleness in Eastern Pennsvlvania. and 22,000 soft coal miners in the Western Btates went back to work. Both mining groups acted in response to instructions from ytr .Tohn T,. LeAvis, president of the United Mine Workers' Union, who said that their further inaction was not now vital to the pending wage negotiation. There was no hint of a work resumption order for ,360.000 men who mine most of the nation 's coal. Apart from 500.000 members of the United Bteelworkers ' Union. who are on strike. at least another 500.000 workers in the steel fabricating and processing plants are expected to beNdU hv the end of the month. In addition. industries dependent of coal and steel are putting ofF thonsands each day.
