Council Set Up To Plan Immigration
f CANBEEEA, Oct. 3. j Mr. Chifley announced the establisn- ! meut of an Immigration Planning ! Council. He said that the Government would rely on the existing Immigration Advisory Council to coutinue its work on matters of general policy on the selection of immigrants, their arrival and reception, and their assimilation into tlie community. Because migration had reached such j proportions planning on an unprecedented scale was needed. Proposals * put forward by the Minister of Immigration (Mr. Calwell) and approvea 1 by the Government included the form- | ation of a planning council to plan and | review progress in absorbing newcomers ! into industry and developmental proI jects, advise on ways in wrhich immij gration could contribute to a desirable patte'm of development, and examine j major pfoblems and difficulties connectj ed with accommodation and employ- | inent. ! The council would consist of iudus- | trialists, trade uuionists, and men I with expert knowledge of partieular industries.
