Questions About Otaki's War Memorial
"PROGRESSIVE
! OTAKI."
(To the Editor) Sir, — Permit nie space to make a few observations and ask some questions about the proposed Otaki war memorial project. Firstly, I wish to suggest that the report presented in your paper on September 28 was inadequate, a,s it does not in .any way say what the "plan" is which was approved by the sub-committee. I understand that should any plan be proceeded with which cannot be reasonably self-support-ing in future, it will fall on ths ratepayers to fin'd the rest of the yearly upkeep. As^one does not usually buy an expensive pleasure car as the first part of a business venture, I hope that the plan which has been approved is the one part of the whole scheme that will s'how the greatest revenue alnd is the mosb urgent requirement of the town. I think that the memorial hall must. surely have preference, as I venture to say from personal experience that it will be selfs'upporting in future. As the ratepayers will have to pay any losses shown in future years on these schemes, I think it only fair that this so-called approved plan should be displayed in a public place for the ratepayers to see what they will be paying for. Will this plan be on view to the public before the executive committee prepares the subsidy application? What is this plan? Is it a complete scheme, hall and sports grounds, or what is it? Will the executive committee publish a detailed explanation of the scheme approved before making its application? I read one report where £6000 was suggeste'd as the cost of a hall. As ono who is connected with building, I venture to say that double this amount would not build a hall fitting to the future requirements of Otaki. I think it is about time the three sub-boroughs of Otaki became unitedvand really got together and * worked for - Otaki, leaving out fnuch of what would appear to be "every man for himself." Hoping- the above information will be given to us. Yours.
etc.,
