Roses To Grow In Triangle Battleground
The triangular lawn at the corner of Bath and Cambridge Streets probably the most discussed and publicised area of ground. in Levin, is to be transformed into a beauty spot with rose gardens as the central theme. At various times it has been advocated as a site for the R.S.A. memorial hall, bus depot and a car park.' At a recent meeting of the Levin Borough Council it was finally decided to beautify the area, and it was left to the Levin and District Beautifying Society to forward suggestions as to layout. At last night's council meeting the society's reply, aidvocating roses as the main motif, was received together with a proposed layout. The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, said that two things had been kept in mind by the society. One was the small amount of maintenance required and the other the fact that the flowering season of roses could be eight months in a year. Good plants could last from five to six years. Roses were sturdy plants and were uniikely to be interfered with by children. Was there any room for a bus stop in the centre aske'd Cr. C. Sherwood to the amusement of the council? "No, not unless they park on top of the roses," was the mayor's rejoinder. It was moved by Cr. D. J. Sweetzer that the society's suggestion be aeted upon. In seconding the proposal, Cr. W. Telford, a previous advocate- of the site as a parldng area for buses, said he favoured the society's suggestion, but nevertheless still thought that the ideal use of the site would be as a municipal bus stop. . The motion was passed without •further comment. The Mayor said he considered that the cost could be reduce'd by an approach being made to nursery owners to , donate rose bushes as a form of advertising.
