Blue Seal And Faultina Scored In Feature Faces At Otaki
At Otaki on Saturday Blue Seal took eharge soon after the Rere Nikitini Memorial Handicap field turned for home and finished strongly to win by over a length from Merry Robin which finished fast to head Dark Arrow just short of the line. It was a great race run in good time and the field was in close order as they moved into the home stretch. Avenger was a close fourth and Voltaic, Battle Strife, Bronstar and Silver Sam were next. Imperial and Gratuity lost ground early. The open sprint was won by Faultina which, after being handy to the leaders on the turn, had the raee wno a' long way from home.
The Otaki-Maoii Racing Club's spring meeting was coneluded in delightfully fine weather and there was- a very large attendance. The totalisator investments amounted -to £73,5604, compared with £57,626 on the second day last year. The" total for the meeting was £138,5314, &s against £123,4444, the increase being £15,087. The course, with the going fairly fast, was in good order. Results are: — PUKETOI HACK HURDLES, £350; 1£ miles and 150 yards; 9-7 HIGH ORDER, 10.2 (W. Rout) .. 1 4-4 Waratangi, 10.4 (H. Ford) 2 1-1 The Stormovik, 10.12 (1. Lord) .. 3 Also: 8-9 Bonifort, 5-5 Tudor Chief, 3-2 Royal Cambria (fell), 2-3 Playtos, 7-8 Pairhome, 13-13. High Tension, 10-10 Te Ranui, 14-14 Pollux, 11-11 Riversdale, 12-12 Jimmy WoodSer, 6-6 Wiremu. Three lengths; a nose. Wiremu was fourth. Time, 2.49. (Winner trained by W. J. Bromby, Trentham.) High Order was well placed early in the hurdles and he jumped to the front at the half-mile. From then on he was never in dang-er of defeat. Wiremu, Waratangi, Tudor Chief, The Stormovik and RoyaJ Cambria followed him into the straight and Royal Cambria fell at the last fence. High Order jumped brilliantly at the last fence and went on to win nicely by three lengths from Waratangi, a nose in front of The Stormovik which headed Wiremu just short of the line. Glenkindie and Kainga began well in the first trial and they fought the finish, Kainga getting the decision by a narrow margin. Pare Pare, Caterina and Four Star followed them into the straight but the leaders drew right a,way and Fellah finished fast for third just in front of D,enote-and Four Star. Thomson, Awapuni. ) There was a thrilling finish to the Pukekaraka Hack Handicap and Terrific just got up "to beat Souverain and Sona.ta which dead-heated for second. Sonata and Pictagain led into the straight ahead of Sonata, Brilliance and Dark Chief and at the distance Souverain and Sonata were being challenged by Brilliance and Dark Chief'. Then Terrific came with a brilliant run to win by a nose. Balcheixie led from Blue Seal, Bronstar, Hulabaloo, Dark Arhow and Avenger as the field raced past- the stands and the pace wras good. The order was much the same into the back and the field closed up at the far turn where Balcherrie was still in front to lead into the straight from Blue Seal, Bronstar, Hulabaloo, Avenger, Dark Arrow, Voltaic, Merry Robin and Battle Strife. Blue Seal was in charge a furlong from the post and, under pressure, he won by over a length from Merry Robin which finished brilliantly. Bhutan looked a better colt than he did on the first day and, although he was fairly well back as the Otaki Hack field made the home stretch, he finished like a bulldog and won going away by the best part of a length. Lady Minter looked likely at the distance and she finished gamely but had no answer to Bhutan s great challenge. Cyclops, in front ior most of the journey, was a good third and next were Marloch and Myfox. RUIHI WEHIPEIH AN A MEMORIAL HANDICAP, £600; 6 furlongs. 1-1 FAULTINA, car. 9.3 (R. Three-quarters of a length; length and a half. Gay Gordon was fourth. Time, 1.13 2-5. (Winner trained by L. W. Dulieu, New Plymouth.) The open sprint was run in fast time and the winner, Faultina, was most impressive. Koala and Fuil of Fun were in front early following a perfect. start and they led into the straight followed by Gay Gordon and Faultina. Faultina was ridden very confidently »and she moved up a furlong from home and soon settled the issue. She won very nicely by the best part of a length from the fast-finishing Zealander. Sir Royal finished well for third, and Gay Gordon, Yasda, Balcairn and Deseado were next. RAHUI HACK HANDICAP, £350; 9 furlongs. 6-6 BALLET, 8.3 'R. Dulieu) 1 2-1 Flying Colours, 8.13 (C. A. Half a length. Night Royal was second past the post but was disqualified following an inquiry into interference. Time, 1.53 2-5. (Winner trained by G. W. New, Awapuni.) The Awapuni- trained colt, Ballet, won the concluding event with a fine finishing run from wide oul on. the home turn. Roscarea and Gay Fellow led into the straight attended by Flying Colours, Night Royal, Night Valour and Ballet, and the last-named sustained a good run to win gomg away by half a length from Night Royal, a head in front of Flying Colours. Wave Crest, definitely- unlncky, was a close fourth. The judicial committee was called together and, after an inquiry iasiing some time, announced that the placings would be altered; that Flying Colours would be placed second, Wave Crest, which had been interfered with by Night Royal half a furlong from home, would be placed third, and that "Night Royal had been placed fourth.
