Why Japanese Reparations Payments Should Cease

Reeeived Fridav 8.15 p.m. WASHINGTON, Sept. 29. India today t supported the United States policy of stopping reparations from Japan. Mr B. R. Sen. Indian Minister at Washington, told the Far Eastern Commission that India favoured halting reparations to avoid redueing the living standards of the Japanese people. He said the United States had made out a good case for allowing Japan to retain a higher industrial capacity which would be devoted to production for peaeeful purposes. India considered the living standards of the Japanese people would have to be maiutained at a reasonable level to obtain a viable rlemoeracv there. He added that the Allies in their own enlightened self-interest should waive their elaims for reparations from Japanese industrial facilities. Mr Sen ask ed that measures be taken to ensuTe that Japan would uot again .resort to unfair labour practices — such devices as currency depreciation, exchange manipulation, excessive economic concentration to restrict eompetition and endanger Ihe standards of living of he? neiglitbours.
