Levin Jaycees Win Debating Trophy At Marton

A team from the public speaking group of the Levin Junior Chamber of Commerce 011 Thursday night won the trophy for interchamber 'debating contested annually by the Wanganui, Palmerston North, Marfon and Levin junior chambers. The final this year was between Levin and Marton, the subject being "That a Nation's Culture is of Greater Value than its Commerce." The Levin team comprised Messrs D. J. Sweetzer (leader), R. S. Antcliff and J. Miller. Marton were represented by Mr. G. Ibbett (leader) , Dr. M. L. Benson and Mr. Wynton Williams. The adjudicator was Mr. N. V. Rix-Trott, of Marton. Givfng his decision in favour of the Levin team by 317 points to 292, Mr. Rix-Trott said that the standard of debating- an'd speaking had been very high. The subject was a 'difficult one and this had been reflected in the fact that the teams had been unable to come to terms in defining it. Nevertheless, they had done very well. If there had been one weakness it had been in the matter of summarising the subject of the debate. A summary ^should be a very impressive array of the facts put forward by each team, and the salient features well summarised made a very strong finish. The choice of vocabulary throughout had been excellent, added the a-djudicator.
