High Priced Bullocks. Two Polled Angus bullocks made the top price of the season at the Levin" sale this week, each bringing £30. They were sold by the Loan and Mercantile Agency, Co., Ltd., on account of Mr. F. Gibson, of Koputaroa. They were beasts of beautiful quality with no waste, and were over 900 lbs in weight. One-Arm Golfer. Captaining a Lon'don golf tearn, an Aucklander, Mr. C. F. Forsdick, won a foursome (1 up) with a hole-in-one, which was celebrated at the 19th. Mr. Forsdick lost his left hand in World War I in the Battle of Passchendaele. He is a former Auckland Universiay athlete and footballer and earlier he was captain of the Auckland Grammar Rugby first fifteen. Plane Helps In Goose Shoot. A party of sportsmen from Wanaka had an unusual experience recently, when an Auster aircraft, piloted by Mr. F. J. Lucas, of Southern Scenic Airtrips, was used to bring a flock of Canadian geese within range of the guns of the party. The assistance given by the plane resulted in good bags being obtained. Cables From Aircraft. As from today passengers on aircraft between Australia, New Zealand and North America may send airgram cables to any part of the world while in flight, announces British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines. The new service is the first to span the Pacific completely and rates are considerably less than existing cable rates. The service will enable passengers to advise friends of their arrival or to send reports of progress back to departure points. Collecting More Taxes. The opening of a branch office of the Land and Income Tax Department at Hamilton on Monday would complete the decentralisation programme which was begun with the establishment of the first branch office at Wanganui, in 1945, said the Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash). The Minister said the department ha'd set up a total of 14 branch offices throughout the Dominion and the results obtained had been most satisfactory and improved administration had been achieved. On Right Slde Of Law. Because the borough boundary ran down the centre of South Road, Masterton, Mr. Herd, S.M., dismissed a charge against a driver of exceeding the 30 m.p.h. limit in a restrieted area. Counsel for the defendant in the case did not dispme the alleged speed of 40 m.p.h., but state'd his client was driving south and was therefore outside the borough. The magistrate upheld defendant. A charge against a motor-cyclist relating to the same area was withdrawn. Population Rising. The population of the Dominion increased in 1948 by 38,894, Europeans accounting for 35,395, and Maoris 3499 of the increase, according to vital statistics in' the annual report of the Health Department. The Maori figure is not complete. The present population is 1,841,531 — Europeans numbering 1,731,583, and Maoris 109,948.. Over the year, live births totalled 49,149 — Europeans, 44,193, Maoris, 4956. During the year there were 17,285 deaths, 15,812 being Europeans and 1473 Maoris. Stock For South Island. Anather large shipment of sheep and cattle, the second to leave the port of Wanganui in a little more than a month, will be loaded into the motor-vessel Puriri when she finishes the discharge of her coal cargo. The second shipment is bound for Nelson, destination of last month's cargo, also shipped in the Puriri. A poor season for fajt cattle and sheep in the South Island has led buyers for Nelson butohers to look further afield for their supplies this year. Suitable animals have toeen obtained from farming areas south ,of Wanganui.
