New Flying-Boat Reaches Auckland
AUCKLAND, Sept. 29. Ten years after Tasman Empire Airways carried its first fare-paying passengers from Auckland to Sydney late , in 1939, the first of the company's new Solent flying-boats, the most modern of Britain 's marine air liners, arrived i from Southamptdh this afternoon. The j Royal Mail aircraft Ararangi, after ! crossing the Tasman easily in six koura, completed her delivery flight with a mild "beat-up" of the company's. headquarters and a smooth landing watehed by an interested crowd, less than seven days out from Britain. The big aircraft, which is externally an obvious successor to the original Empire fiying-boats and present fleet of Tasman-class planes, delighted her passengers and crew. Both Captain K. A. Brownjohn, the company's operations manager, and Captain C. G. Griffiths, who cominanded the aircraft. spoke highly of her performance and ships built specially for Tasman Airprospects. The first of four sisterpassengers, cruises at more than 200 ways, the Ararangi can carry 45 jmiles an hour- and weighs 79,0001bs. 1 when f ully laden.
