AUUJiLAJND, Wept. 28. Mining operations in the whole . of the Waikato "boalfield, exeept open-cast workings, came to a standstill today. The men at six underground collieries in the -Huntly district are on strike. A total of 1500 is idle and the loss of output is about 4000 tons daily. Today 's trouble jsriginated in the State-owned Wilton mine at Glen Massey, which has entere.d its third workless day owing to a dispute with the management over- the safety question. The men at the Rotowaro, Alison, G'len Afton, Maedonald, Renown and Pukemiro collieries deeided to strike in sympathy. They returned home after meetings at all the mines. The Wilton men, it is' understood, objected to the employment on a coai eutting machine wurking on pillars of a man whom they considered not sufficiently experienced for the class of work. They claimed that it endangered his life. It is stated that the management deelined to replace this man. The exe cutive of the Northern Miners' Union may meet at short notice to discuss developments. This is the first complete "stpppage on the Waikato coalfield for about seven years.
