Heavy Frost Damages Crops At Christchurch
CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 29. Christchurch this morning ex- ( perienced a frost of 19.9 degrees, the second in severity since 1905 when records were first taken by t.ie MeLeorological Observatory. The heaviest frost on record was of 20.1 degrees on July 20, 1931. : Stone fruit crops in the Heath-i cote ais.rict suifered severely, i which in the Loburn area growers fougnt the threat of low-tempera-tures with smoke pots. Early vegetables in suburban gardens were blackened and a grower at Governor s Ba"y reported serious damage to early potato crops. A temperature of 25 degrees at 8 u cio^K uus morning and a cold southerly ..reeze made conditions j very wintry.
