Tourney On Saturday Will End Season
"For ward")
(By
On Saturday the basketball season will close with a tournament commencing at 11 a.m. The- Otaki bus will leave from the usual place at 10.20 a.m. There are s.ill some games to be played in' the A and B grades, but these will be concluded on Saturday when the tournament is completed. Wanderers On Top. Wanderers, who have p.ayed all their games, are the 'winners of the A grade competition, This team. has played through two seasons, winning the A grade cup during 1948 and 1949 without a loss. It is a fine performance and this team is to be congratulated on its basketball and on the way the members have remained together through two seasons. It is difficult to select one section of the team for. special mention, but without the good fielding of C. Bell in the .forward third and the most accurate shooting of J. Winiata and M. Nicholson the high' goal scores, which were a feature of Wanderers' games, coud not have been maintained. Coilege A, who met Wanderers on Saturday, played ' skilf ully and cleverly to keep Lhe score down to 22 goals. Marie Davis was responsible for much of this effort in the defence third. As M. Nicholson is such an accurate scorer, Ma'rie Davis, by her clever dodging, was able to intercept the ba'l on many occasions and pre"vent the Wanderers' forward from scoring. Bouquet For Coilege. The Co lege, team deserves congratulations for the indefatigable manner in which it refused to accept defeat in spile of the experience and greater skill of its opponent. Rather late in the season Coilege Old Girls A have found a forward who seems as if she will be an asset to the team. 'Coilege D have rallied together and after a number of defeats played and won two good games on Saturday. Athletic are still in a strong position and it will be interesting to see the result of the game between Textile, the leading B grade team. Much will depend on this game.
