Devaluation Nearly Caught N.Z. Cricketers
Received Wednesday, 9.30 a.m. PARIS, Sept. 20. The devaluation of the pound sterling nearly resulted in Mr. J. H. Phillinps, manager of the New Zealand cricket team, being unable to pay the New Zealanders' hotel bill in Paris. When the announeement was made, all banks in Paris closed temporarily and for a time travellers' cheques were not cashed. The team arrived in Paris before devaluation so had some money, but it was unable to secure all it renuired and it was only through the New Zealand LegAtion advancing Mr. Phillipps sufficient; to meet the team's requirements that irritation and complications were avoided. Even so, members spent the day with no cash for shopping in their pockets.
