Mercer said he spent. some tiine at ipstitutions in .the tJnited States where much work was beiqg eamed out on poliomyelitis researeh. There. was a general belief that Vfithjn a ' period of years, a vacpine would "be produced which wpuld 'be effective against polionjyelitis. If the vacqine did not actually prevent the disease, it would at least mitigate the niore drastic effects of it.
