Returned Servicemen Meet

Mr. . F. O. . Burtt, presi'dent of the Shannon branch of the Returned Servlces' Association", presided over a fair attendance-: of members at the *Septemb&r meeting of the .brancht held. in the Druids' Hall on S^urday evening. The secretary, Mr. E. J. Gunning, reported that the membership roll stood at 257 members, made up of 192 at Shannon, 55 at Tokomaru sub -branch : and 10 at Opiki sub-branch. Transfers into th local branch since the • last meeting were Mrs. T. G. Wallace and Messrs D. J. Carter, T. G. Wallace, J. T. B. Aitchison, H. Edkin and L. H. Pigott. Messrs J. L. Carter, E. Bond and J. F. Allison were transferre'd into the Tokomaru sub-branch. , Transfers out from Shannon were' Messrs S. W. Long and T. W. Thompson. Regarding the carnival week conducted by the branch in aid of the war memorial 'hall fund, Mr., Gunning ' reported that £382 14s 2d had been handed over to the memorial committee. Members considered that this was an excellent result and a motion of thanks to the public for their support was carried. On the motion -of Mr. V. J. Bateman, it was resolved that in order to strengthen the bonds between the Shannon branch and the. Tokomaru and Opiki subbranches, -members visit the latter districts and provide entertainment there. It was agreed that Mr. T. Kelly arrange for the hire of* the Tokomaru Hall and advise when it was available. Discussion took place regarding the distribution of food parcels to servicemen in Britain and it was' stated that the credit balance in the account for this purpose was £37. It was ultimately agreed that the secretary arrange for the despatch of bulk cased foodstufls to be forwarded to the Kirkcaldy branch of the British Legion in Fyfeshire', Scotland. Mr. Burtt advsied that the en- * tertainment committee had arranged a tentative • date for the annual reunioh, this being November 7. Arrangements are yet to be made with the'Tin Hat Club regarding their attendance. It was agreed that a special general meeting be called to 'discuss the rules of the local branch and other important business. The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the ohair.
