League Test Ends With Last-Minute Win
WELLINGTON, Sept. 18. An electrifying 20-yard spuft by McBride in the last 30 seconds of the match brought the Kiwis victory o.ver Australia in the Rugby League Test match at the Basin Reserve on Saturday. The match held 12,000 speetators enthralled till the final whistle. For the iirst quarter of an hour the Kiwis appeared unable to settle down in face of persistent Australian attacks as the visitors hooked the . ball with monotonous regularity. An 8 — 0 lead and mastery of -the situation gave the Kangaroos a temporary snperiority complex. Then the New Zealand backs saw the ball and took the initiative with a series of dazzling rearguard thrusts. To the mature judgment, splendid understanding, and at times brilliant pe'netration of their backs, can the winners attribute their narrow yet convincing win. Deprived of the ball for most of the game, the Kiwi backs had an unenviable task. Desperate taekling was their lot for most of the match. On the attaek, however, they had the full measure of their opponents and as an attaeking unit, completely outshone them. The game ended 26 — 21 in New Zealand 's favour. ^
