OAMARU, Sept. 14. In perfect weather and ground eonditions before a crowd of 4000 at tne Showgrounds this afternoon, Australia defeated South Canterbury-North OtagoAshburton 12 — 0. The Australians made play almost throughout the mateh, playing bright open football with exceilent baeking up and eover defenee. They met with stout tackling by Combined and failed to increase the score through lack of goal kiclcing, four tries being unconverted as well as chances from penalties. Australia gained possession from 34 scrums to 10, 36 lineouts to 23 and o rucks to 3. Cornforth, eighth man, played an outstanding game for Australia with Shehadie prominent in the lineouts and Windon and Cross a pair of hard workers in the tight. Burke gave fine service from the serum and Emery was aiways dangerous in possession, scoring two of the four tries. Allan and Fogarty showed speed and resource on attack. Mosely was the piek of Combined forwards and broke away several times. He was Well supported by Comer and* Gallagher. Meade and Berry playea well and Halvorsen at fullbaek got through' a lot of work in a tradesmanlike fashion, his lielding and kicking being the best on the field. Combined went to the attack from the kick ofl: and in three minutes Berry missed a chance to open the scoring from a penalty. Combined kept up the pressure but Cawsey marlujd in the face of a charge. Short passing by Berry, Mosely and Gallagher saw tiie last/named thrown out in the corner but after ten minutes the ascendency passed to the Australians. Cawsey missed from a penalty but Burke sent out to Emery to Fogarty who scored near the corner. The kick missed as did also another eas^ 'chance from a penalty. Halvorsen was caught in possession near the line but the defenee held and Meade cleared, The Australians set up repeated passing rlishes, Fogarty taking I>lay to near the line, the pass infield going to Shehadie, to Emery who kick ed over the dead ball line. Nice scissors passing again saw FogaYty away but lie was thrown into toueh at the corner fiag and there was no further score at half time. — Australia 3, Combined 0. On changing over Combined again pressed, Burke making an opening for Emery to score. A few minutes later Burlce again found a gap to send Emery over for his seeond try. • Cornforth led a charge but three infririgements cost the Australians penalties and Halvorsen kept them penned near the line with fine kicks to the corner. They were unable to cross the line, however, and in turn were thrice penalised. Betts and Cross took pia} to the other end where nice passing by the Australians saw Allan cut through a gap to score just before nq side was sounded. Australia 12, Combined 0. Mr. T.
