Cyclist Hurt By Hit-and-Run Motorist
A young road cyclist had a narrow escape from serious injury at duslc last night when his racing cycle was struck from behind by a fast-travelling hit-and-run motorist at Makerua. He was Edward Brooks, aged 23, a facto'-y hand, residing at Church Street, Palmerston North. "With Lance Malcolm McDonald, aged 19, of Ruahine Street, Mr. Brooks was returning from a training ■ run to , Shannon and when on the Makerua R'oad the cyclists were passed by a small black car eontaining two oceupants. Later they in turn passed the car which was pulled up beside the road. Shortly afterwards the car apDeared suddenlv from behind, smashed into the rear of Mr. Brooks' cycle and -apsized him on to the bumper of the car. It continued on its way for some yards and swerved to the right, Mr. Brooks being thrown to the ground, lucldly clear of the wheels. A passing motorist who witnessed the accident brought the two young men into Palmerston North, and after :nspection by a doctor, Mr. Brooks was taken to his home. His main injuries were severe abrasions to the right leg. Police inquiries are proceeding on tho description of the car given by the other motorist and the cyclists. Mr. Brooks' cycle was prac.ticaily' demolished.
