Personal. • Mr. R. Swinburn, of the local railway staff, is at present- on two months' transfer to Wellington. Old Resident Passes. The death occurred on Thurs'day of ,Mr. Richard Thomas Roberts ajb the home of his daaighter, Mrs. Hannam, Nathan " Terrace. Although the lg,te Mr. Roberts had been confined to his bed for many years, he was wellknown to old identities of this district. The . late gentleman was in his. 85th year. State House Progress. Good progress is being made in the construction of the' State house units in Stout Street and they will be a welcome contribution towards relieving the housing problem of the town. Contracts are being called by the Housing Department for a further three houses and the department is seeking further building sections in Shannon. Town Brightening Up. After a spell of fine weather, Shannon's beautifying „ areas are looking attractive. The long delay, enforced by bad weather, in having the grass cut has now been broken and a start has been made with trimming the lawns and cutting the grass on the foor- . ough footpaths. An area on the roadside in Venn Street has been cleared in readiness for the planting of shrubs. Some Whitebait Catches. The recent fine weather has caused the Manawatu River to fall to normal with the result that there have been some small run$ of whitebait. Local fishermen have reported catches of two to three pounds yesterday and a catch of almost five pounds was reported from the Paiaka area on Thursday. If the present weather holds for the weekend, the river banks will be a popular spot on
Saturday and Sunday. A fourpound tin of whitebait arrived in Shannon on Tuesday after a tnp by air from the West Coast. The fish was in excellent condition.
