Australia's All-Out Drive For Population
CANBERRA, Sept. 9. Stating that Australia would have a population of 8,000,000 by November, 9.000,000 early in 1954, and JO, 000, 000 towards the end of 1957, the Minister of Immigration (Mr Calwell) added in the House of Representatives that moFt Australians now living would survive to see their country inhabited by 20,000,000 people. "It is no exaggeration to sav- that Australia is now entering into a period of population growth -of enormous dimensions, ' ' said Mr Calwell. ' ' This vasi growth has, in fact, exceeded the most optimistic hopes the Government eve: entertained. Sinee tlie national census of 1947 nearly 160,000 permanont resi1 dents have arrived. "I am confident that in the year ending June 30, 1950, at least 170,000 newcomers will arrive, and in the following years the number will be even greater. Given a continuance of the present birth and death rates, and of immigration on the large scale planned, Austra lia should increase her numbefs by ne tween two and a half to three per cent a year." He, added that the Government. was making a poWerful drive to distribute population away from the great cities tc ensnre tW assimilation of immigrants.
