Rugby Gate Allocations — Blow By Blow!
Thursday's "Big Game" gate takings of £270 6s 6d certamiy .o'oked quite impressive for Levin when the figure was pubiished last week, but after all the financial obligations connected with the >ame have been met the New Zea'and Rugby Union, ■ the freasury and the Levin Borough Oouncil will eome out on top in uhe financial stakes with the Horowhenua Rugby Union running a very poor fourth. Rugby Union Secretary, J. E. Fullarton was greeted with smiles if anlicipation when he produced nis ledgers at the management commitlee meeting on Tuesday night, but members' smiles changed to wrinkled brows and downcast eyes as the promising lotal was ruthlessly s.ashed.
The net resuit was: Wages £18 15s, advertising £4, amusement tax £30 14s 4d, net gate £216 17s 2d, Horowhenua union's one-third share of net gate £72 5s 9d. But, to continue: — Ten per cent of gross gate, to Levin Borough Council £27, cartage and arrangements re seats £5, curtain-raiser expenses £18 ls 6d, painting of goal pcsts, etc., £1 5s, total £51 7s ld. Net profit to union: £20 18s 8'd. It 'is only fair to point out that the New Zealand Rugby Union has to meet the cost of the team's assembly in Levin and hotel expenses out of its share. As the president of the union, Mr. R. L. Robinson, said at the meeting, the union did not wish to quibble over the amo-unt paid (to the borough council either, as • it had been more than generous • to the union in the past and had met the union in its every request before the game. Some members said it was a pity that ■ the * percentage of gate takings to the council was -based on the groSs amount, but the union was of course morally bound to pay up on that amount. •For Thursday's game a new set of jerseys and two footballs were also purchased in order that the j team would be well turned out j and -a credit to the district, but, as was pointed out at the meeting,' J these afe assets which will not j go amisS. . ,j
