Terrific Attack Crushes Turpin
^ LONDON, September 6. The Anstralian triple boxing cliam)Hon, Dave Sands, to-night became the British Empire middleweight titleholder when he lcnocked out the Englishman Dick Turpin in the first round of their fight at Harringav Stadium. Turpin had won the title from the New Zealailder Bos Murphy. Sands weighed 11st 51b and Turpin 11st 311b. Within half a ttiinute of the start Sands clipped Turpin with a left and followed up with a batteTv of lefts and rights to the head and body. Down for Nine Turpin went down under this terrific battering about 40 seconds after the '•ound began. He stayed down for a count of nine. When he got up Sands rushed him all round the ring with lefts and rights, mainlv to the body, none of which Turpin could block. Turpin went down the second time before a terrifie onslallght while on the ropes and just got up at the count of nine. Sand eased up a little bnt obviously was measuring Turpin, Who made no attempt to fight back. When Sands got gping again he ;!orced Turpin into a corner and belted him to his krtees. Turpin fell to the ■anvas. He got to his knees at the 'ount of six and tried to l'ise at nine, bnt failed and was counted out. ■ The bout lasted 2min 45secs. Like a Killer Turpin felt the effect of S&nds's first puneh so much that he never recovered. Sands went in like a killer. He saW that he could putieh thi'ougk Turpin 's guard, and the fight Was a foregone conclusion from the first knock-down. - Turpin retains his British title. Eddie Thomas earned the right to meet Henry Hall for the British welterweight title when he out-pointed Ernie Roderiek, former welter and middleweight champion, o\'er twelve rounds.
