News Briefs From Borough Council Meeting
' ^ — The usual fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held recently when the Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald, presided over Crs. B. Clayton, V. J. Bateman, R. S. Downes, C. M, Cronquest and H. Aitchison. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. L. G. Sayer and C. G. Wishart. On ithe motion of the Mayor, Cr. H. L. Norris was granted leave of aibsence for a further period of two months on account of illness. In a letter to the council, the Palmerston . Norbh Hospital Board pointed out that it had given public notice of its intentions to raise a loan of £66,000 for the purpose of erecting a maternity hospital at Feilding. The term of the loan "was 20 years. The letter went on to state that with the statoilised rate, the proposal would not at present increase the hospital rate in this area. The board felt that it was most essential to proceed with this work as the present maternity hospital acco'mmodation in the northern end of the board's -district was quite inadequate, concluded the letter. On the motion of Cr. B. Clayton, a Stout Street resident- was granted one yard of metal for a footpath entrance. Permission to conduct a street stall on October 7 was granted to the Shannon branch of the New Zealand Labour Party. With regard to a letter received from the Shannon Football Club pointing out that the club was prepared ' to pay its portion towards extra poles for lighting in the domain, the matter was left in the hands of Cr. Clayton to confer with the club. It was resolved that the town clerk write to the club extending congratulations on its success in the Horowhenua Rugby Union's " senior competition this season. Cr. .Clayton, chairman of the reserves committee, reported that the tree pruning within the borough reserves would be completed shortly and a start would be made on cutting the grass on the edges of the footpaths. The chairman of the building committee, Cr. Bateman, reported that arrangements had been made to have the doorsteps and iron ladders at the reservoir repaired. The acting-chairman of the library committee, Cr. Downes, stated that there was little to report on library matters only that the library was functioning most efflciently. On the motion of Cr. Bateman it was resolved to install four extra street lights. These are to be situated .outside the recently constructed rest room in Ballance street, on the pole near the Bank of New Zealand in Plimmer. Ter-
race, on the town side df the bridge at the southerii eiid of Plimmer Terrace and at Stout street, near Mr. C. H. Speirs' residence. Reporting on behalf of the chairman of the works committee, the Mayor stated that general maintenance work was being carried Out. An inspection had been made of the sealing at the East Road borough boundary and it was found that urgent repairs were required. Work was immediately put in hand and should prove satisfactory. On the motion of Cr. Bateman a resident of Cemetery Road was granted permission to carry out certain improvements in front of his property. Attention is to be given to pot-holes along the Old Foxton Road and repairs to the footpath in Ballance Street, near Vogel Street.
