Bright Cricket At Hastiugs Festiral i Received Sunday, 7 p.m. HASTINCfS, Sept. 3. t With Babone scoring an attractive 78 to take him past 1000 runs for the tour, Donnelly making a bright and easy 50, Hadlee, after retiring when struck painfully hy the hall, driving his way to 114 not out, and Reid smiting a spirited 54, New Zealand were nine down for 363 at the end of. the first day's play against South of England at the Hastings Festival. It was an enjoyahle day's cricket. Hadlee was magnificent and Eahone, in reaching four iigures, rarely batted better' in England. Smith, who was another candidate for 1000 runs, halved his residue and now requires only 22. Festival play differs in the hours of play from other first-class matches. They are from noon to 6 p.m. and the players have tea on the field. South of England fielded a strong team with Mann as captain and four more who played in the Tests this year: Compton, Edrieh, Bailey and Evans. The others were Gimblett, from Somerset, Allen from Gloucester, van Eyne„veld from Oxford University, Valentine and Mallett from Kent and Perks from Woreester. The New Zealanders were without Wallaee, Burke, Hayes and Cave. A erowd of about 5000 was present and among the speetators were the Duke of Norfolk, and Sir Pelham Warner who lunched with the teams. The sun shone pleasantly and the pitoh, whieh has a patch or two of clover, was inclined to be greenish after overnight rain.
