Canadian Labour Against Sympathy Strikes

'WELLINGTON, Sept. 2. The presideut of the Canadian Trades and Labour Gongress (Mr^ P. ? Bengough) has informed,the New Zea- . land Federation of Labour that i^? xs v opposed fo sympathy strikes in favour of the Canadian Seamen's Union, The letter reeeived from Mr'. gough by the secretary of the Federation (Mr.* K. McL. Baxter) today stated that af ter , careful cpnsideration the Trades and Labour Congress had de- P eided to be associated no longer with the C.S.U. while it remained under its present leadership; * _* In reply to a question from Mr. Baxter regarding the working of ships manned by C.S.U,' or Seafarers, Ihternational Union crews, Mr. Bengough said waterside workers. should abide by their agreements with employers and do the work which they would normally carry out under those agreements. The International Transport Workers' Federation has informed Mr. Baxter it has approved of the suspension of the Canadian Seamen's Union and recognised the Seaf arers ' ■ International Union as an aiBliation of the federation as being the union most representative of seamen in Canada. The Minister of Labour (Mf.' McLagan) siid tonight that he had been informed by the New Zealaud High Commissioner iu London (Mr. Jordan) / that the confereuee of the International Transport Workers' Federation had decidfed that the Canadian union; be expelled from the Federation and that the Canadian section of 'the Seaf arers' International Union of North Ameriea be reeognised as the federation in Canada, as it was most representative of seamen in Canada. The Minister said he had also been informed by the New Zealand High Commissioner in Canada (Mr. Tho'rn) that the executive council of the Trades and Labour Congress had decided that it could not be in association with the Canadian Seamens' Union while the union was controlled by its present leadership, and to suspend the union from the Trades and Labour Congress of Canada.
